Kaya Diani
Over 200 km along the coastal provinces of Kenya lie 10 separate forest areas, mostly on low hills ranging in size from 30 to 300 ha, which contain the remains of fortified villages called KAYAS of the Mijikenda people.
They represent more than 30 surviving kayas. The kayas have not been used since the early 20th century and are now revered as the repository of the spiritual beliefs of the Mijikenda people and the sacred abode of their ancestors.
The forest surrounding the kayas was tended by the Mijikenda community to protect the sacred tombs and heins and is now almost the only remnant of what was once the extensive lowland forest of the Kenyan coast, making it a protected retreat for fauna and flora.
The kayas are a fundamental source of the mijikenda's sense of being in the world.
The Kaya Diana stands right in front of our Tombo house and conveys her spirit with her 150 different species of trees, some considered rare and others 450 years old. The diverse population of wild animals ensures a pleasantly earthy background noise day and night.
Be mesmerized by the distinctive view of our Kaya rooms and experience Mijikendas in your own unique way.
